The ADEA Diabetes Research Foundation has approved a $60,000 Research Grant to Dr Virginia Hagger to develop a customised approach to support transition to university for young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D).
Young adulthood represents a challenging life stage for people with diabetes. It is a time when young adults leave home, commence tertiary education, enter the workforce and assume full responsibility for their diabetes management.
“There has been a lot of attention on children with diabetes at school but so far there has not been a specific focus in higher education. Yet we know diabetes affects all aspects of university life and many facets of university life can compromise diabetes management”, said Dr Hagger.
The Diabetes on Campus study would investigate what support young people with diabetes needed while at university to help them self-manage their condition and succeed academically.
